Event benefitting St. Nicholas - Thursday at Marfreless

THIS THURSDAY - 6-8 p.m.
MARFRELESSE
2006 Peden Street
Houston, TX 77019-5314
There is no sign: It is the Blue Door under the metal Staircase in the parking lot behind the River Oaks Theatre and across the street from California Pizza kitchen.
For this evening each donation of $10 towards St. Nicholas Church will receive a raffle ticket for fun gift baskets and other fun items every thirty minutes. Come for goodwill, festive atmosphere, great drink specials, and merry munchie spread and fun music.

Dear Marfreless friends, family, and loyal guests,

For the past eight years, the Marfreless family has raised money to "adopt a family" by offering stockings, to be customized by each contributor, for a minimum donation of atleast $5 (many give $10 or 20 and we have been blessed enough to have a handful of folks give $50 or $100). While this has been a fun and somewhat fulfilling gesture, we struggle with the knowledge that so many are doing without (not only during the holidays but all year long). While we know that we cannot "save" the world, we found a wonderful organization that is in desperate need of funds. St. Nicholas Church, located at 2508 Clay, 77003 is one of, if not the oldest operating inter-city church in Texas. Founded in 1887, they have roughly 90 families, many elderly. They have a "food pantry" that is open once a week to give a hot meal to hungry folks and they serve on average 75-100 families. Their ability to buy food, for pennies on the dollar, through the Food bank will make each and every dollar that much more valuable.
A couple of things regarding this: (A) We have gotten off to a late start as stores didn't start putting out Christmas stuff until August, and still we have already raised almost $200 and (2)We are going to have a "stocking decorating" happy hour this Thursday 12/16/10 from 6-8 PM. Each donation of $10 or more will receive a raffle ticket and we will raffle off fun gift baskets and other fun items every thirty minutes. In addition to the goodwill, festive atmosphere, great drink specials, and merry munchie spread, we will playing fun music (not Christmas, don't be skeered). Though we do not have a chimney, Santa has a skeleton key and comes by and drops all kinds of goodies in the stockings (we leave him a shot and a cig, but he has to go outside to smoke it!). If you cannot make it Thursday, please try and stop by before Dec 23rd or so and make a donation and get your stocking for to decorate. Please pass this on to anyone and everyone that you think might be interested in a fun and charitable event. If you cannot get by the bar, you are welcome to send your donation to Marfreless at 2006 Peden, Houston, Tx 77019.

I encourage everyone to attend a service at St. Nick's. I don't care if you are Catholic, Jewish, Loel Olsteenian, Spiritual, Atheist, Mormon, or Scientologist. It is a truly loving and devoted community despite their economic situation. My Family and I have been a few times and have never felt so welcome. People came up to us after the service and hugged us and shook our hands and really made us feel welcome.

I hope to see many of you on Thursday or over the next few weeks, I pray that you all have a very Merry and safe Christmas, Hanukkah, Quanza, or whatever you celebrate. thank you for taking the time to consider this and I hope that you will be able to join in the festivities.

Cheers,
Michael Wells
713-898-7957

As mentioned before, please pass on to your friends, co-workers, family, etc. Thank you so very much!

WCBBQ "B.A.D." Fish Fry this Sunday

Hey y'all!  Just wanted to remind you about the WCBBQ "B.A.D." Fish Fry to be held next Sunday, October 24th at 2:00 p.m. at Blanco's (3406 W. Alabama in Houston).  The proceeds from this event go to the BBQ Auction Fund so we can continue to support the youth and education of Texas.  It's going to be a ton of fun, and you know the food is going to be great because Randy Trahan is cooking.  Nobody can fry a fish like a Cajun even if Harry is helping!  And for you non fish eaters, they'll have chicken tenders also.  So come on out and have a cocktail (or two or three) with the rest of your BBQ family!  This awesome weather is perfect for sitting outside with a cold one and friends!

I'm attaching the form to order tickets in advance (sorry about the creases – it was folded in my binder).  They're less expensive if you buy in advance plus it helps everybody with food planning so please do purchase now.  Please let me know if you have any questions.

Thanks!  Hope y'all have a great weekend!

MEETING SPOT FOR LONG RUNS

MEETING PLACE: We will be meeting on the East side of the park where Arnot and Memorial Loop meet. The pool is there and it has a parking lot. There is a picnic table between the pool parking lot and the Loop (at the Southwest corner of the pool lot - closer to where you turn into the lot off of Arnot.) We will meet in that area. Team In Training meets here which is why I know it is usually a decent to meet for parking. (the picnic table is sometimes occupied by TNT, but look for us near it.)

PARKING: Always stinks a bit. You can sometimes find a spot in the pool parking lot or you can park along Arnot, or when really busy Crestwood that runs into Arnot. This keeps us away from driving through the park with traffic. You can come in from Washington and turn on Arnot (off the Washington Circle). Or come in Memorial drive and turn down Crestwood to Arnot. Regardless, parking is not usually too horrid, as opposed to meeting by the benches at the Tennis Center or on the Fruit Loop side. No need to walk miles to the meeting area!

TIME: Meet at 7 - only wait until 7:10. Standing around gets old, I know. Let me know the days you will be coming. If there are only 2 or 3 of us that day we will leave once everyone gets there and not wait if we do not know anyone else is coming.

MAP: You can google map Memorial Park, Houston, TX and map this area it if you are unsure exactly where it is.

Hopefully this answers any and all questions about where and when we meet. :)

FRIENDS IN TRAINING starts Oct 2nd!

THE GROUP
Lindsey, Hilary, Kristen, Marla + 1, Linda & Kim
We meet the days the schedule to the right says for long runs. Usually on Saturday. I changed the weekend long run occasionally for Holidays and days that I work Saturdays (to Sundays) but you are welcome to run the Saturdays without me - just let me know so I will not be expecting you.

MEETING TIME IS 7 a.m.
Always let me know that Friday if you are coming so we will wait for you - however, the latest we wait is 7:15. It gets annoying when it is cold to stand around. If we decide it is too hot to run at 7 once we get into long runs we can change the time.

DISTANCES
As we go along if we want to add some distance (example - week 3 we are feeling good and want to do 4 instead of 3) we can - this is group input and we will decide as a such. However - we will not go down in mileage, as that would be detrimental to us. CURRENT PLANNED DISTANCES ARE POSTED HERE – LOOK RIGHT.

ROUTES
In the beginning on short runs (3 miles) we will run the loop. I know some routes from Houston Fit and Team In Training once we get up in mileage. I think most of you have done Houston Fit before and I am up to route suggestions. gain - group effort.

There is a great site for mapping routes (http://www.usatf.org/routes/), and I have done all the runs and have for each distance mapped out. I generally keep them up Allen Parkway or out Woodway towards Tanglewood. If they get too complicated someone (me) may get lost! You can click on the link to see the routes we will be running. There are options for a couple of the mileages, we will pick before the Saturday so we will know where we are going beforehand. Open to suggested routes! ROUTES will be in a different Posting (called RUNNING ROUTES) so you can refer back to it easily in the future.

Go Friends!
