The Puppy Mill Bill, passed in the last legislative session, was SUPPOSED to prevent these types of horrific conditions. Sadly, the proposed rules regarding the licensing and regulation of dog and cat breeders actually ALLOW the keeping of animals on 100% wire flooring, ALLOW the stacking of primary enclosures of dogs (letting urine and feces fall directly on the dog below), ALLOW breeders/non-veterinarians to perform surgical procedures on animals. ANGRY? There is something you can do right now to prevent innocent animals from living in mills like this.

Please send a polite email to Ms. Melissa Rinard, Legal Assistant, General Counsel's Office, Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation at erule.comments@license.state.tx.us by February 17^th. Don't know what to say? Here is a sample letter:

Dear Ms. Rinard:

I am writing today to urge you to strengthen the proposed dog and cat breeder regulations as published in the Texas Registry on January 20^th.

1. Please prohibit the use of wire flooring for all facilities. Having animals spend their entire lives on a wire floor is cruel and inhumane.

2. Please prohibit the stacking of cages above one level. This is unhealthy and unsanitary and allows feces and urine to fall on the animals below.

3. Please prohibit non-veterinarians from performing surgical procedures such as ear cropping, tail docking, debarking, and dew claw removal. These are surgical procedures and should be performed by a licensed veterinarian.

4. Please remove all references to a licensed breeder to use their "best efforts" regarding temperature control. This phrase is vague, ambiguous and unenforceable. It also weakens the federal regulations which are the minimum standards and can only be strengthened, NOT weakened.

In addition, there should be no "grandfathering" of existing breeder mills. Dogs and cats currently living in these horrific conditions, rampant in Texas, should not be sentenced to a future of suffering and painful death at the hands of individuals who consider animals a "cash crop."

Next Sunday, October 9, at noon, hundreds of people are getting together to play BINGO at the SJPST Lodge (around the Heights) to raise money for the Berry children. The three children lost their parents in a car accident over this past July 4th weekend, and two of the children were also paralyzed from the waist down. The community has really rallied to support these children, but we still need your help!

SNAP NEEDS YOUR HELP!

at the

FALL 2011 BAYOU CITY ART FESTIVAL

The 2011 Fall Bayou City Art Festival is just a month away. It has become a tradition for SNAP volunteers to staff the beverage booths to raise money for spay-neuter. We need your participation to continue the ongoing success of our largest volunteer fundraiser of the year. It's a lot of work, but it's a lot of fun too, so please email our volunteer coordinator to volunteer today!

The festival takes place on Saturday, October 8 and Sunday, October 9, in downtown Houston (around City Hall). It runs from 10:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m. on both days. Volunteers can sign up for one or more shifts. Volunteers must be 18 or above because alcoholic beverages are served. Please be aware that no drinking of alcoholic beverages is allowed during your shift.

Be ready to tell us which shift(s) you would like to work. Each volunteer receives a festival t-shirt and is asked to wear it during his or her shift. You also receive FREE admission to the festival (a $12 value) on the day of your shift.

Frequently Asked Questions Everything you need to know about becoming a Bayou City Art Festival Volunteer!

BCAF Volunteerism 101

We count on exceptional volunteers to help us host a beautiful event for the Houston

Community. Before you register, please read the following guidelines to keep in mind for

your volunteer experience!

Arrive to your shift EARLY. We encourage volunteers to plan ahead for parking and traffic delays. We count on you as a volunteer to fulfill your commitment and be punctual.
Please stay for your ENTIRE shift. We rely on you to work a full shift so that all areas of the festival are covered at all times. If there is an emergency, please contact a Volunteer Committee Member or staff personnel.
There are absolutely NO children under the age of 16 allowed to volunteer. Children under the age of 12 are admitted to the festival at no charge.
Remember to bring a hat and sunscreen.
You must sign out by returning to Volunteer Check-In at the end of your shift. You are welcome to stay and enjoy the festival once your shift ends, but you must sign out first.
Additionally, we ask that you remove your Volunteer T-shirt once your shift ends. This is mainly to avoid confusion among our staff and artists to ensure that everyone wearing a Volunteer T-shirt is actually volunteering.
There will be water and snacks available at Volunteer Check-In. There will also be Volunteer Committee Members monitoring the festival to make sure volunteers have relief when they need it.
Remember to keep in mind that volunteering at our festival requires a good amount of standing and moving. Please remember to wear the appropriate clothing to stay cool and comfortable.

As an event, we always strive to make your volunteer experience as enjoyable as possible. We are always open to your feedback and strive to improve our program with each festival!

*Anyone wishing to volunteer for more than one shift is welcome to do so. However, you MUST remember to sign-in for each shift that you work. We ask that volunteers report 15 minutes early for their scheduled shift(s).

What types of volunteer opportunities / activities are there?

Ticket Taker

Take admission tickets from patrons at the entrance gate. You will be given pocketed smocks and a box to place collected tickets. This position has direct exposure to sunlight. Please remember to bring a hat and sunscreen!

Greeters

Volunteers greet and hand out festival maps as patrons enter the gate. This position has direct exposure to sunlight. Please remember to bring a hat and sunscreen!

Artist Relief

Provide relief to artists, eg- hand out beverages, snacks, booth sit (when applicable).

Festival Market Booth

You will be selling festival t-shirts, posters, and hats. Some basic training will be given at beginning of shift.

Coupon Booth

You will be selling food and drink coupons to patrons. This is fun and fast-paced!

Patron Art Pick-Up

Volunteers will monitor artwork being held after purchase and assist with loading artwork into patron's vehicle. You must be 21 years old to work this position.

VIP Lounge

Monitor VIP area, check guest wristbands, assist with food and drink service.

Stage Runner

Assist with performances and performers at the Houston Arts Alliance Stage

Volunteer Relief

Monitor volunteers throughout the festival and ensure they have relief, water, etc. as needed.

Creative Zone

Art League Houston - Harvest Pins! Create a colorful corsage inspired by the fall season.

Other Creative Zone activities coming soon!

Please note: Bayou City Art Festival reserves the right to assign volunteers to the area of greatest need at the time of volunteer check-in. Volunteers may also be moved to a different assignment during their shift depending on areas of need.

Where is Volunteer Check-In and how do I get there?

Volunteer Check-In is located in front of the Heritage Society across from Entrance Gate #1 at Lamar and Bagby.

What will happen at Volunteer Check-In?

Sign-In with a Volunteer Committee Member
If you're under 18 you'll hand in the Waiver you brought with you.
If you're part of a large group of underage volunteers, we will check to make sure you have a chaperone 21 or older present for every 5 minors, and that ALL members of the group are present.
Receive your Volunteer T-Shirt
Receive your shift assignment

Ready to sign-up?

You will be given the option to register with either Art Colony Association, the parent organization for the festival, or one of our Nonprofit Partners. We need the most help in the ALH Creative Zone, so make sure that you choose one of the Creative Zone shifts.
Remember to fill out all required fields.
Once your registration is complete, you will log-in with the email you provided along with the temporary password you are given.
When logged in, click "Calendar" on the top-left side of the page to view schedule of shifts. Select your shift and receive your confirmation!

o A Room with a View committee reserves the right to assign the starting bidding price. No starting bid will begin higher than $300.

The American Cancer Society is a nationwide, community-based voluntary health organization dedicated to eliminating cancer as a major health problem. DetermiNation is the American Cancer Society's endurance program that will train you for the Houston Marathon and half-marathon while you fundraise to fight cancer.

Essentially, friends and family of participants support their efforts to compete in an event by making donations in their name. The American Cancer Society has always been involved with the Houston Marathon as a charity of choice for people contribute to, but 2012 will be the first year that Determination will provide training for Houston and a higher commitment of fundraising in the community.

Bubbles for Berrys' fundraiser scheduled for Saturday, July 16

A dog-wash fundraiser has been organized to benefit the children of car crash victims, Robin and Joshua Berry.

"Bubbles for Berrys" will take place Saturday, July 16, at Little Matt's, 6213 Edloe St., in the West University neighborhood, from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Volunteers are needed for the dog-washing crew, as well as dirty dogs to be washed.

"I heard that the Berrys' have two dogs," said event organizer Tracy Pesikoff. "I believe that dogs bring hope and smiles, and this family needs all the hopes and smiles they can get."

Pesikoff said she doesn't know the Berry children, Peter, 9, Aaron, 8, and Willa, 6, who were injured in the July 2 car crash that tragically killed their parents; she is, however, friends with their aunt, Simone Berry, who is married to the kid's uncle, Matt Berry, who now has legal custody of Peter, Aaron and Willa.

"So many people in the community feel like they want to do something. This is something I needed to do," said Pesikoff.

The fundraiser gives the opportunity to involve children and adults, she said.

Organizers will bring the supplies. Little Matt's is providing the space and water.

About a Room with a View: A Room with a View is a Happy Hour and Art Auction that gives artists an opportunity to showcase their work while contributing to the mission of the American Cancer Society. Artists will be appreciated that evening, and recognized again for their contributions at Oscar Night America in February.

ENTRY ELIGABILITY & REQUIREMENTS
o Artwork must be donated in full, no commissions accepted
o Artists may submit up to 3 works to be juried, and there is no fee to submit
o Work must be assigned a value by the artists. Only works valued between $100 and $500 will be accepted
o The value assigned to the work will be the value given for tax purposes to the artist.
o A Room with a View committee reserves the right to assign the starting bidding price. No starting bid will begin higher than $300.

Hi Ringwald fans!

This is the final year of Mixers & Elixirs at the Museum of Natural Science, and the Ringwalds are opening the series this Fri. July 8 from 7-10 pm. The "Oh My Pocket Pie" and "MMM Cupcake" food trucks will be parked outside, and there'll be plenty of booze inside, assuming you make it to the bar before Carrie Ringwald. We're expecting over 1,000 guests in attendance, and tickets are $15. Hi all, I imagine a lot of you saw the story of Officer Kevin Will who was killed recently in the line of duty. His wife is 6 months pregnant and he has two step-children (the link to the story is below). He was a friend of my friend Will, who is an amazing person and had many wonderful things to saw about Kevin, so I wanted to pass on that there is a fund set up through the 100 Club in his memory. It is am amazing job Police Officers do for us. He was 112th Houston police officer lost in the line of duty.

    - less than $40 a week (skip dinner and drinks out on Friday, you will be prepped for your Saturday
       morning long runs which will make you lean and mean - you can go out Saturday night!
   - an estimated $5.23 a DAY (Can you say grande latte?)

AS A BONUS: You will have a fundraising page on determinationhouston.org where you can tell people about why you are running, the progress you are making, how far your runs are, etc. If you do that on Facebook it is just bragging. Don't be THAT guy. On your fundraising site people applaud your efforts because you are supporting a great cause, and they will show their support by pledging funds through you.

We have 51 Houston marathon spots and 50 half spots. 20 of the marathon spots are already taken, and we are first come, first served. So call me with any questions and join us today!

Our first training will be Saturday, May 28th at 6 a.m. in Memorial Park. If you just want to come out for a run to see what it is all about please let me know. Happy to have you give it a test run.

This event features an exciting selection of artwork for sale by ALH Healing Art students as well as ALH Studio School students in the main and project galleries.

Boogie along with the DJ's disco tunes while delighting in savory treats by Butter & Co., delicious desserts courtesy of Whole Foods, and tasty beverages from Saint Arnold Brewing Company. Entry to the benefit is free and open to the public.

The exhibition will be on view from April 29 to May 6. A portion of artwork and concession proceeds will help support Art League Houston's Healing Art program, which provides free art instruction and supplies to adults living with serious illness and physical disabilities. Please join us in supporting this unique and valuable program, while enjoying the opportunity to purchase amazing artwork by amazing artists at affordable prices!

About Art League Houston's Healing Art Program: In 1990, Art League Houston (ALH) founded its free Healing Art program for adults living with HIV+/AIDS. In 1995, ALH provided additional Healing Art classes to serve adults living with other severe illnesses including cancer, multiple sclerosis, fibromyalgia, and physical disabilities. The ALH Healing Art program is the only one of its kind for adults in Houston, outside of hospital or clinical settings. ALH Healing Art classes are offered free of charge. ALH teaching artists Kermit Eisenhut and Emily Sloan instruct Healing Art students in painting, collage, drawing, and mixed media. In addition, ALH provides Healing Art students with opportunities to exhibit and sell their art each year.

About the Art League School: Through the Art League School, ALH offers a wide array of affordable classes and workshops for adults taught by many of Houston's outstanding visual artists. The Art League School offers courses in oil, acrylic, and watercolor painting, classical portrait, figure, abstract, and landscape painting, drawing fundamentals, figure drawing, jewelry making, printmaking, assemblage, and principles of design.

Each meeting will include general information about our programs, our training partner In-Flight Runnings run coaching philosophy and tips for those training for their first marathon or half marathon. WHAT IS DETERMINATION: The American Cancer Society is a nationwide, community-based voluntary health organization dedicated to eliminating cancer as a major health problem. DetermiNation is the American Cancer Society's endurance program that will train you for the Houston Marathon and half-marathon while you fundraise to fight cancer.

HOW IT WORKS: Essentially, friends and family of participants support their efforts to compete in an event by making donations in their name. The American Cancer Society has always been involved with the Houston Marathon as a charity of choice for people contribute to, but 2012 will be the first year that Determination will providing training for Houston and a higher commitment of fundraising in the community. We are also training runners for the Galveston Mardi Gras Marathon, if you want a smaller, more intimate event.

TRAINING
A 35 week training program will begin May 28th and cumulate in January with the Houston Marathon or Half Marathon. Our group training partner is In-Flight Running. Owners Michael Merlino and Duval Ruiz have a combined 41 years in fitness training. Runners of all levels are welcome – if you are a first timer seeing what you can do or an experienced runner looking to increase speed, this program will get you to the finish line.

Participant Cap Increased for 40th Anniversary of Chevron Houston Marathon
New Early Registration, Time Qualifications for Guaranteed Race Entries

HOUSTON (Apr. 5, 2011) - The Houston Marathon Committee has increased its participant cap to 24,000 for the 40th anniversary of the Chevron Houston Marathon on January 15, 2012. The Committee will also offer early registration for a limited number of runners who meet time qualification standards to receive a guaranteed race entry.

The raised cap represents a 2,000-participant increase over the 2011 cap and will be applied to the marathon field with 13,000 entries reserved for the marathon and 11,000 for the half marathon.

"With the large number of guaranteed marathon entries allocated to runners who have completed five or more Houston Marathons, we wanted to allow more runners to participate," said Wade Morehead, executive director of the Houston Marathon Committee. "The marathon cap increase allows us to cater to our dedicated runners while at the same time offer more opportunities for others to take part in our event."

Runners who meet a four-hour and two-hour time qualification standard for the marathon and half marathon, respectively, are eligible to receive a limited number of guaranteed race entries available during an early registration period which opens on May 10, 2011 at 8:00 a.m. CST and closes on May 31 at 11:59 p.m. CST. A 10K qualifying time of 54 minutes or less may also be used to enter the half marathon to allow an opportunity for newer runners to enter our race. Finisher times dating back to July 2010 may be used to qualify for early registration. A list of eligible qualifying races can be found at chevronhoustonmarathon.com.

Time qualification entries will be limited to the first 2,000 marathon and 1,500 half marathoners who meet these standards and are available on a first-come, first-serve basis. If the time qualification fields are not fulfilled during early registration, the remaining race entries will be added to the open lottery pool.
In addition to time standards, runners who have completed five or more Houston Marathons, deferred 2011 race registrants and members designated by the Houston Area Road Runner Association (HARRA) are eligible to sign up early and receive a guaranteed race entry.

Race registration for the general public will open on June 1, 2011 at 8:00 a.m. CST and extend through June 23, 2011 at 11:59 p.m. CST. Runners must register online at chevronhoustonmarathon.com during the 23-day period. All registrants will be notified of their selection status no later than June 27, 2011.
Registration fees for the marathon and half marathon races are $125 and $105, respectively.

A limited number of guaranteed race entries will also be available through a "Heroes" charity registration for both the marathon and half marathon. The "Heroes" charity registration enables runners to make a direct donation of at least $350 to an official race charity of the runner's choice, plus the cost of registration, to secure a spot in either race. Official 2011-2012 Run for a Reason charities will be announced on May 2, 2011. This past January, the Run for a Reason program raised a record $2 million for 52 participating nonprofits.

The 2012 Chevron Houston Marathon, Aramco Houston Half Marathon and El Paso Corporation 5K will take place on January 15, 2012. Registration for the El Paso Corporation 5K will open on September 15, 2011.

Join us the Friday for the ever fabulous Molly & the Ringwalds from 7-10 (I believe) FREE show, we can drink Schlitz beer in honor of our pup, and be home at a decent hour (*gasp*) Rumor has it that Fabulous Jen will return to croon that night - come out and see if the rumors are true or if it is an April Fools prank ...

We will actually be there so let us know if we should keep an eye out for you!

Bayou City Art Festival is this weekend at Memorial Park

March 25-27th from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. all three days
The annual, juried, fine art event boasts a stress-free (Their words, not mine - just copied from the web site) outdoor gallery brimming with 300 artists working in 17 artistic media. Adding to the festive outdoor gallery are wine cafés, an interactive Creative Zone for children, restaurants, Broadway in Houston's Broadway Café, and a performing arts stage with on-going multicultural musical and dance entertainment presented by The Houston Arts Alliance.

No public parking at Memorial Park: Park & Ride FREE on the BCAF Shuttle! New and improved comfort shuttle service from NW Mall and Downtown Theater District. CLICK HERE FOR PARKING & BUS INFORMATION.

Tickets will be available at the gate on festival days (NOTE THAT AT GATE IT IS CASH ONLY), and online. Admission is $12 for adults, and free for children 12 and under. All proceeds benefit Art Colony Association's Non-Profit Partners.
